Richard Henry Guitars

Richard Henry Guitars are one of Europe's leading brokers of vintage sunburst Les Paul Standards as well as specialising in second hand and vintage American guitars.

I first got to know Kirk Hammett when he bought a 1960 Les Paul I took down to the Reading Rock Festival when Metallica were headlining one year. James Hetfield also later bought a 1958 burst and a 60’s Flying V from me so occasionally I reach out to them when I think I may have something of interest. When I first took delivery of ‘Greeny', forgetting it’s history, controversy and the superstition that surrounding it, I was immediately struck again by how good the top looked and then how great the guitar actually sounded. It has a wider dynamic range than many other bursts I’ve played and the bridge pickup has so much bite to it that it almost sounds possessed. I emailed Kirk who immediately got back to me said he’d be in London in a couple of weeks and that he’d really like to see the guitar. So the day before Metallica were due to play the Glastonbury Festival I took ‘Greeny’ over to the band’s hotel. Kirk didn’t have an amp in his room so I had to call a friend who lived nearby who kindly came over with an original vintage Marshall 18w combo so we could plug in. There was no doubt in my mind that he wasn’t ever going to not buy the guitar after he’d played it through that amp. After twenty minutes of playing and some earlier pursuasion from a certain Mr Jimmy Page who had told Kirk ‘’That’s THE one to have”, the deal was done. When the band returned to the UK a week later, Kirk Hammett became the third high profile guitar player to take ‘Greeny’, possibly the most notorious 59 Les Paul ever, back on the road. On it’s debut gig with Metallica, ‘Greeny' made it’s first major public comeback to over 40,000 rock fans at a show in Prague.

The world's most important and the first ever rock star owned 'burst, originally owned and used by Keith Richards with The Rolling Stones from the Ed Sullivan Show to Altamont. Also used by Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Mick Taylor & Mick Jagger. Full history from the original owner until now featured on this site.

I have been involved in the professional guitar industry for over 25 years beginning in the late 80's at Mamelok Musical Instruments Ltd and later at A1 Music in Manchester where I first got hands on experience and my love and appreciation of American guitars was birthed.

Back then vintage guitars were just 'second hand' guitars, often more affordable than a brand new shiny guitar, but in my opinion always having far more character and mojo than no new guitar could ever wish to have. Vintage guitars to me are the connection I associate with the iconic guitar players of the 60's, 70's and 80's.

I left A1 Music in 1997 when I was asked by Mark Collins to go on tour with The Charlatans as his guitar technician and have since worked as a touring backline and guitar tech, stage manager and tour manager for such artists as Buzzcocks, Cast, Hard-Fi, John Squire, Keith Levene & Johnny Marr.

After managing a very successful vintage guitar department for one of Europe's leading guitar specialists I helped set up a new company in 2007 called "We sell Guitars Ltd'. offering high end investment grade guitars as well as pioneering a specialist brokering service.

When Rob and I parted company I continued to trade on a smaller more intimate level under my own name.

In 2013 I retired from touring altogether to devote my time to my family, my guitar business and Pear Studios which I share with my lifelong buddy, Richard Thorne.

I offer very reasonable comission rates in brokering guitars and also offer a free finders service.
